How to overclock Laptop

Before I tell you how it’s done I have to warn you that this kind of procedure can irremediably damage your CPU and cause the instability of the entire system if done wrong. Also overclocking laptop don’t give that higher increase in performance as it gives with computers.

How to overclock your Laptop

Overclocking is basically forcing the processor to work at frequencies higher than factory settings. In order to understand how this is possible I will explain the fabrication process. The development of a CPU takes a long time, even years, but they lunch new models a lot quicker. This is because of the fabrication process. The “same” two processors that come out the production line can reach different frequencies when tested and are labeled according to their stability point. This stability point is relative and this gives you the chance to oveclock it – it’s a matter of luck how much you can do that.

The frequencies we all know (let’s say 3 GHz) is a multiple of the FPB – Front Side Bus. The FSB kind of gives the maximum speed at which the other components work, especially the memory.
Overclocking a laptop is tricky and dangerous especially because you can’t improve the cooling system as you can do with a regular PC. Regarding this aspect you may find interesting the article “How to cool a laptop” <-hyperlink and it also decreases the life time of the battery.

Now let’s get to work. Unfortunately each processor has its tops and downs so I can give you only a general guide and let you find more on Google.

The fastest and I find it the safest way to do this is from BIOS. Some won’t let you change anything, others will have an automatically overclocking system which needs to be enabled and some will let you do fine changes to everything, from FSB to multiplier rate and voltage. If you can’t do this from BIOS there are lots of freeware programs out there on the internet. One of them is ClockGen.
Always be careful and gentile with the settings. Increase the frequency in small steps and check the stability every time. The best way to check the stability of the system is Prime95. This program keeps the processor busy at 100%.

Personally I am not in favor of overclocking laptops simply for the reason that I have paid lot of money on the insurance and coverage of it, like 15% which covers any accidental damage of it for the next 3 years, and if I overclock my laptop, I will lose this which is too much of a risk to be taken. Anyway if you don’t have any such concern and if you have a old laptop to play with, go ahead and overclock it.
