Plasma Gasification
By definition, Plasma Gasification is a relatively new solution for garbage disposal which make use of the Plasma technology. With this technology which has the potential of becoming revolutionary; electricity can be produced from garbage once it has been disposed using a self-sustaining method. The plasma technology is not a new technology but in the past, it had never been considered seriously for garbage disposal application.
Plasma Technology:
As mentioned earlier, the plasma gasification is based on plasma technology which is not that hard to comprehend. In plasma technology, a high-voltage current passes between two electrodes in order to make a high intensity arc. This arc in turn rips the electrons from air and then it converts gas into a field of radiant energy having greater intensity; this is also called as plasma.
How Plasma Gasification works?
The following steps will help you in understanding the overall working of plasma gasification:
1- In the first step of Plasma Gasification, an auger is fed with the collected garbage. An auger is a special machine that shreds this garbage into very small pieces.
2- After the garbage passes through the auger and is shredded into pieces, it is then fed into a chamber called as plasma chamber. The plasma chamber has a stainless steel vessel which is filled with ordinary air or nitrogen and is sealed as well.
3- The third step after the shredded garbage is fed in the plasma chamber is to pass a 650 volt electrical current between the two electrodes; creating the plasma.
4- This constant flow of electricity through the plasma results in the creation of highly intense field of energy capable of destroying the garbage and dis-integrating it into its original component elements.
5- Some of the major by-products of this process are glass-like substances which can be used for household tiles or syngas (a combination of carbon monoxide and hydrogen that can be converted to get ethanol or natural gas etc.
6- This syngas when leaves the converter has a temperature of about 2200 Fahrenheit degrees. When this Syngas is cooled by entering it into a cooling system, it generates steam.
7- This steam is then used to run turbines that in turn produce electricity.
The whole system has the capacity of producing the electricity that is required for its own operation as well. Moreover, it can be used in order to produce commercial use materials. The plasma gasification technology provides various benefits which are quite obvious and apparent. The technology is self-sustaining as it can generate the power required to run itself; only requiring initial electrical power. Another major advantage is that it is eco friendly as it take the garbage to dispose and can be used to produce commercial products as well in order to generate user profit as well.
