How to Record Streaming Audio
In Yesterday’s article, I had talked about how you can record streaming video, now today I will talk about how to record streaming audio.
Audio streaming is a term used for “live” listening. You don’t have to download the entire file to listen it, it will load in the background as you listen it. This technology is also used for life broadcasting, such as online radio stations. Recording such streams is easy.
To record streaming audio, you need a free program Free Sound Recorder. It can record audio streaming from the internet as well as audio signal coming from your sound card. Because the software records though the sound card you must turn off any alert and sound on your pc before recording or they will be recorded too.
Let’s take a look at the settings accessible through the “Settings” button.
General settings
Here you can modify the output file type, the recording viewing mode and the output directory. Regarding the file formats, Mp3 is the most popular, it’s recognized by any player and it has the best compression – quality ratio. Wav is better when it comes to quality but it takes up lots of space. Wma is the format developed by Microsoft for Windows, it’s small but you may have compatibility problems.

Output format settings
Here you can set the setting as compression rates for each type of file.
Automatic gain control
These settings allow the program to automatically increase the recording’s volume.
Voice active system
These are some advance settings which you will may never use but you can find more about them by clicking “What is this?” button.
Now, after you set the program as you need it let’s go back to the main panel. Select your recording device and the recording mixer, volume and balance.
Hit the record button (the red circle)!
The program has a warning implemented to tell you to reduce the volume if it’s too high.
This is only one program, there are hundreds more. Although we all have the means and know how to record streaming audio doesn’t mean it’s legal. Any audio stream you record is protected by copyright laws and you may get into a lot of trouble!
