RG-59

RG-59 is a type of coaxial cable that is used almost specifically for low power video and radio frequency signal connectors. The cables main impedance is of 75 ohms, which can be used for dipole antennas.

The “RG” stands for radio guide, and was originally a specification used by the military to help classify different cables, but since then has become obsolete over the years as a result of lack of use.

This cables common implementation is that of use for composite video, which operates at baseband video frequencies. Because the frequency it operates is higher, it’s not ideal for long distance applications. Instead, RG-6 cables may be used in place of a RG-59.

The cable itself is usually packed in with certain devices, such as a VCRs or digital satellite receivers. The connection of these devices is a short distance, so the cable is quite sufficient for its use. It’s cost is actually quite low compared to other types of cables, so this is also an advantage for the cable overall.

The cable is also useful in synchronizing two digital audio devices. BNC connectors may also be used with this device into to connect it with different types of devices.

What is a BNC connector?

A BNC Connector (Bayonet Neill-Concelman) is simply a radio frequency connector used for terminating a coaxial cable. The name comes from a combination of the two inventors of the device: Paul Neill and Carl Concelman. The “Bayonet” part of the name comes from the way it was planned to be developed, which involved a bayonet mount type mechanism used for locking it in place.

Similar cables include:

RG-58
This is a special type of cable that is most generally used for wiring purposes. It is used to run low power signals and in conjunction with RF (Radio Frequency) connectors.

RG-6
They are coaxial cables with 75 ohm impedances and also have 18 AWG center conductors. This particular specification hasn’t always been in use, however, but today it is what classifies a coaxial cable as an RG-6.

All in all, there are many similarities to the cables in general, but the individual aspects that precisely identify the cable separate them. These characteristics also play a large role in how they are applied in connecting devices. Before deciding on a cable to use, always make sure to check the impedance it operates on and do a little research before connecting anything, as you may cause damage to the devices the cables are connected to.
