Scan Disk
Scan Disc is a disk analysis and repair tool with main task to check a hard drive for errors and correct any problem found. Scan Disc is part of Microsoft Windows and MS-DOS. Scan Disk as a maintenance tool, it can repair files and find bad clusters, usually with great success. Errors like these often happen when Windows locks up and needs to be restarted.
Scan Disc, however is not suitable for NT based Windows versions (that includes Windows 2000, Windows XP) since it can’t check NTFS disk drives. For computers running NT based Windows excellent solution is new CHKDSK.
Scan Disc as we know and use it today was developed and presented for the first time in MS-DOS version 6.2.Ths first version did not have a graphical user interface (GUI). Newer versions developed for Windows 95 and Windows 98 were given a GUI and with this graphical addition users were able to find progress bars, buttons and info regarding the status of the scan and potential errors. Scan Disc recognizes various error types inside the hard drive: system crash, improperly closed applications and the existence of viruses or other programmes that may harm your computer.
Once Scan Disc starts running, it will check the hard disc for any trace of defect or error. At the same time, Scan Disc will check all file systems and correct bad clusters that may have been created when one of the programs was aborted. When Scan Disc finishes the task, computer user will receive a report containing all errors that were found during the scan, and the information about the amount of disc scanned. It is highly important for every computer user to use the Scan Disc on regular basis, because it ensures that the data on their hard disc is non-corrupted and safe for use.
It is recommended to use Scan Disc at least once or twice a month. It is very useful to run it periodically and especially if your system starts acting funny or unusual. Also, users working online and downloading files should use Scan Disc more often.
Finally, here’s how to run a Scan Disc!
If you use Windows 95: Click the Start button. Next step - select Programs and then Accessories. Then pick System Tools and there you will see Scan Disc. Click on that option to start it.
If you use OSR2 (later version of Windows 95) and Windows 98: Scan Disc is incorporated in your system and follows every restart in which you haven’t completed the shutdown process.
