SDTV has a smaller picture resolution than HDTV. Though images on SDTV are of better quality than today’s Televisions.SDTV’s use stereo sound for audio output. The signal sent in a SDTV format is more compressed than that of other high definition formats. Since the digital signal is very compact, broadcasting channels can now carry five SDTV programs at a time, whereas HDTV’s can only broadcast a single channel program.Multi-program broadcasting, known as multicasting, was not available with analog transmissions. . Digital SDTV with a 4:3 aspect ratio has similar looks as any typical analog TV (based on NTSC, PAL ) without the ghosting & static noises.

SDTV has given the consumer a wide range of choice in the type of viewing stuff they are able to access like Children programs, documentaries, movies or breaking news. It can be considered equivalent to digital satellite services like Dish TV or Tata Sky

Most TV sets in use today in most homes are not capable to receive digitally transmitted data. You need to install a DTV receiver in order to receive signals and process it for display on TV screen. A DTV receiver works by connecting the television to an output where you will be able to view SDTV and HDTV programs, but still they will not be of the very fine High Definition picture quality.
