Send and Receive Hotmail mails from Thunderbird
As Microsoft has again started POP3 for their email services, you can now access their mail services like Hotmail, MSN and Live from desktop client email Thunderbird. Thunderbird is a free email client from Mozilla and can be downloaded from their site.
After you successfully install Mozilla on you system, first of all go to Menu-> Tools and open the Account Settings. On the Account Setting click Add Account which is located at the bottom of the Account Setting window.
Then simply select Email Account and next it will ask to enter your name and the Hotmail or Live account ID that you want to add.
Now, select POP as incoming server and put pop3.live.com as the incoming server. Next put the incoming username you like to have.
You can also select a label for this account like Business or Home, but it is not mandatory. Now after finishing the setting click on Server Setting and be sure that the port is 995 and Security Setting is SSL.
Now for outgoing mails you have to change the SMTP address as well. Simply click edit or change by selecting the Outgoing Server under the Local Folders. Here set the SMTP as smtp.live.com and the port must be 587. Here also check the item named TLS.
That’s all. Now you can send and receive Hotmail or LiveMail from Thunderbird. Here are the settings at a glance …
Incoming POP Settings:
Incoming Server: pop3.live.com
Port: 995
Must Check: SSL
Outgoing SMTP Settings:
Outgoing Server: smtp.live.com
Port: 587
Must Check: TLS
