Smart Card Reader
The smart card reader can usually be found as a single unit which can be attached to a computer. The use of this reader will allow the smart card, the computer and the smart card reader to communicate with ease.
The smart card reader can be called a card programmer, card acceptance device (CAD), interface device (IFD), and also a card terminal. The reason why a smart card reader is also called a card programmer is because it can write to the smart card.
When a smart card reader is designated as a reader it means that it is a unit which can interface with a computer for almost all of its processing needs. The smart card reader will create a path which will allow your program to send and receive information and commands from the smart card.
When buying a smart card and the smart card reader you need to understand that each of these cards has been made according to the manufacturer’s requirements. This means that you should allow the smart card reader to instigate the necessary protocols for communicating with the smart card.
These protocols will allow you to communicate with the reader which will then communicate with the card. The reader acts as a messenger between the parties. Once the communication is accomplished the smart card reader will send the relevant data to the smart card.
Once the smart card receives the data it will process this information. The processed information will then be sent back to the smart card reader. After the reader receives and process the returned data it will then send this data back to the point of origin.
There are four types of classes used to communicate with the smart card reader. These classes are:
* Ones for communicating with the reader
* An application which is used to test and use the cards for its intended and specified purpose
* ISO command classes to communicate with the 7816 protocol
* Classes to convert data to the manufacturer’s specified format
The majority of smart card readers have many security features to them. These features will provide extra security for data that you do not want access without authorization. The capabilities and the on-board intelligence of the smart card reader will change depending on the use it has been intended for and the price that the reader can be found at.
