Stopping Breastfeeding
Breast milk is considered the best thing a kid can have and it is highly recommended that babies be given mother’s breast milk. However, it is a normal issue that babies tend to get accustomed to breast milk and create lot of problems when we think of switching their diet. When the baby becomes a bit older, we should stop feeding breast milk as this is the time when he needs something solid to eat. It is quite a concern as stopping breastfeeding is not an easy job. The emotional attachment is one of the major concerns that make stopping breastfeeding painful. Mother’s milk is not only rich in nutrients; it is also easily digestible for the baby.
The kid can be irritated and start crying if you suddenly stop breastfeeding. There are some factors that should be considered before stopping breastfeeding:
a) Analyze the health of the baby: if the baby is not healthy and gets infected easily, stopping breastfeeding is not recommended.
b) If the baby is around 6 months and has started eating solid food, then you can consider stopping breastfeeding slowly.
c) If the baby is too very upset on not being supplied breast milk, do continue for few more days.
d) Do not stop breastfeeding all of a sudden. This is all about the baby’s growth, so do it with love and care.
For more detailed description, here are some steps that you can follow for stopping breastfeeding:
a) Start skipping breast feed once or twice a day. Make the child a habit of sucking a bottle or nipples.
b) Make the baby feel comfortable and active and be accustomed to other people. Do not give a sippy cup in your child’s hand which can confuse him and getting upset.
c) Make him lit on your lap and play with him. This works wonders in distracting him from the breasts.
d) Invite close ones to handle the baby for some time so that the child becomes used to other people also.
e) Another important factor is to make sure that there is not milk left in your breasts. Try to feel your breasts or ask your partner to do so. If you feel they are full, try to pump them and leak out some milk, or ask your partner’s help.
However it has been observed that it is difficult even for the mother in stopping breastfeeding. So it might hurt your feelings, but remember that it is important for both of you.
