Tabjacking
If you have heard of Tabjacking and are wondering what is Tabjacking, It is a type of Internet threat in which tabjackers hack into a browsers tab functionality to introduce malicious codes into a user’s computer. In this process a users web browser tabs fall under the direct control of an external agent & the new tab is added to a website that the external agent is endorsing. The malicious code bombards the user with irritating advertisements popup, & even spywares and other malicious software’s.
Today’s browsers have this feature to open multiple windows in the same windows of a browser. This is available in most browsers available today like opera, internet explorer 7, Mozilla Firefox, safari etc. This feature makes it very easy for internet users to navigate through WebPages. It also allows to quickly switching between pages.
How Tabjacking Works
The introduction of having multiple tabs to be opened at the same time exposed a vulnerability that can be exploited by malicious programs to infiltrate in your computer systems. On opening a new tab, the malicious code/scripts are automatically executed to “hi-jack” the newly opened tab window. These compromised tabs will then show or load the unsolicited content from the associated website. Tabjackers may also introduce harmful viruses and worms that could infect your PC. It is generally hidden inside the legitimate web content and hence detection of such invasions is quite difficult.
Tabjacking poses to be a great threat to computer users’ privacy & security. It is possible that the tabjacked window may indulge the user to enter vital personal data like credit card information or bank account details and passwords. Thus the user may unknowingly become the victim of identity theft & dangerous Internet frauds.
The tabjacked browser may incorporate itself with the core files of the operating system and the infection may stay even after rebooting the computer and execute every time the user uses the browser. This technique is employed by unlawful web companies to make profit in the overgrowing web market. This type of threat is now being examined by web security experts come-up with a solution to effectively countermeasure this flaw.
