TTY/TDD are a group of telecommunication devices that enables deaf and mute people to communicate over the telephone. TTY is abbreviated as telephone type writer, teletypewriter or text phone. TTD is abbreviated as telecommunication device for the Deaf. They usually come across the same category TTY/TDD.  Manual devices such as typewriter, TTD devices etc fall under digital devices or computer assisted devices. This is what TTY means.

TTY/TDD devices is as big as the typewriter or a computer. They usually consists of QWERTY keyboard and a display or screen that is either LED,LCD or other modern technology. They may also contain a printer or other such printing technology devices. They may look like type writer and a roll of paper. Text can be printed or shown on display devices or both using such technologies.

TTD/TTY devices uses phone line for communication. A TTY/TTD can either communicate to another user having TTY/TTD devices and to other standard telephone devices.  When used to communicate with a standard telephone,  it calls a relay operator and he communicates with both the other parties using their voice or a TTY/TTD devices as required. There are a many protocols and rules used to communicate.  Many different standers of protocols are available. The most popular amount them is the Baudot code. It implements asynchronously at 45.5 or 50.0 bauds.  Another very popular code is the V. 18 standard protocol. This is popularly used in America.

A new TTY/TTD devices can handle a almost every protocols and call a person even directly using a modem and the required special softwares. These protocols works with ASCII and half modulation methods which makes it easier to be interfaced with computers.

A number of TTY/TTD devices are available these days and this technology keeps emerging due to the innovations in computer technology. Portable devices have already been developed and there are also ones that can be used in the place of a normal land line. Devices compatible or hook up to every land line phones are also available. The sound of the ring can be adjusted and the pitch, certain volume etc of many devices can be fitted a visual device that acts as an indicator. They may also have hearing aids. TTY/TTD devices can show text and also aloe people to talk.  Some of them can send text too. SMS(short message service),email atc are also included in TTY/TTD devices as a further options .
