Types of Satellite Television Networks

The TVRO and DBS are the major Satellite Television network types.

  1. TVRO – Television Receive Only
TVRO was the first satellite system available for home viewing of satellite Television. It requires a relatively big dish of 3 to 6 feet in diameter and works in C-Band frequency.TVRO systems are also called as C-Band Satellite Television and BUD, the Big Ugly Dish. FTA – Free To Air is same as TVRO service but the FTA terminology is used to refer TVRO in other continents except North America (North America uses TVRO term)

Pros:

a) With TVRO systems you can also receive free channels and independent feeds from for
instance news companies.

b) We can happen to receive the unedited material that is broadcasted from a news
crew somewhere in the coverage area of the satellite to their headquarters.  So
unedited before live news ready at our home with the proper equipment.

Cons:

a) TVRO has less channels available because of the C band satellites it uses.

b) TVRO systems also need a movable dish because it needs to get all the channels of
many satellites.

c) The receiver with its big diameter needs more space to occupy s well as frequently
moved.

  1. DBS - Direct Broadcast Satellite
Satellite TV via DBS is done using the Ku-Band. These satellites work on higher frequencies and can transmit higher power signals. A small dish of 18 inches is enough to receive all satellite TV signals. DSS - Direct Satellite Service is a type of DBS service.

a) Direct Television is a provider who uses DSS technology to provide paidKu band.

b) EchoStar’s Dish Network is a provider who uses DBS via Satellite technology to provide paid programming over Ku band.

Pros:

a) Smaller dishes with small diameters are enough to receive the satellite signals because of the usage high frequency K Band signals.

b) No maintenance, since it is aimed at one satellite unlike TVRO dishes.

c) DBS is a simple, low cost installation. Often the installation is for free as it really is very easy to do. The only thing required is a bit of knowledge of where to find the satellite and the tools that come along with it makes it easier to locate.

Cons:

a) There are no free channels available on DBS satellites unlike to TVRO satellite TVs. Because that the DBS are mostly owned by the satellite Television providers.
