What is UDI - UDI is a digital video interface specification based on (DVI) Digital Visual Interface. It was designated to be a low cost implementation while allowing compatibility with existent HDMI & DVI display devices. UDI was specially targeted at PC monitors and graphics card manufacturers & did not support the transmission data like audio. The Unified Display Interface will substitute VGA connectors on computer monitors & electronic devices. UDI and HDMI are digital technologies whereas VGA was based on old analog technology. Unified Display Interface was majorly endorsed by Intel with support from Samsung and other manufacturers. In early 2007 both Samsung & Intel had withdrawn from UDI, There have been no announcements since then.

UDI provides higher data transfer rate than its predecessors (i.e. up to 16 Gbit/s, compared with 4.9 Gbit/s for HDMI) and integrates a kind of Digital Rights Management system called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection [HDCP]. If you are Using the UDI Interface with an in- built HDCP, and if you try to see content that is not authorised on that device, then your monitor will not show the content.
UDI Special Interest Group (UDI SIG) was announced On December 20, 2005.They worked on deciding the rectified specifications and advertising the display interface. Members of this team include Intel , NVIDIA, Apple Computer, LG & Samsung. The UDI specification was then settled in July 2006. The difference between UDI and HDMI was maintained to a minimum as both specifications were created for long-term compatibility.

The UDI Interface is compatible with the Digital Video Interface (DVI), allowing components with DVI technology to communicate with the new standard. Though DVI is also digital and a step higher from VGA it is not compatible with HDMI. UDI removes the analog to digital chip needed in DVI displays & the UDI interface is smaller & comparatively cheaper to manufacture, therefore it will cut down the price of high definitions display devices.

Some experts predict that the UDI will be the standard in future. VGA technology lasted around 20 years, and If UDI survives half of this it would be a great achievement.
