How to upgrade laptop memory
Before you even think about changing the laptop memory modules yourself I must warn you that you may be losing your warranty by doing this. If this is not your case or you are willing to take the risk here is what you need to do.
Checking the Laptop configuration
First thing you need to do is find out what type of memory your laptop needs. There are a lot of variations out there on the market nowadays and you need to make sure you buy the right one.
Another thing you would want to do is to find out how many memory slots are there and how many of those are free. Based on this information you can choose either to expand what you already have, either to replace the modules. For example, if you have only one 512 MB module and you want 1 GB then you will have at least one free slot to add another 512 MB. If you have just two slots and are both occupied you will have to replace them with higher capacity ones. Besides the type of the memory module, you need to know the speeds supported by the motherboard and the speed of the old modules if you plan on keeping them. You can mix different speed modules but the faster one will get slowed down due to compatibility reasons.
All this information can be found in a few ways: by checking the motherboard’s manual, by checking the motherboards manufacturer website, by using specialized software such as Everest or by opening the laptop and actually checking the modules and slots.
Opening the laptop
This procedure should be done only with the power cord disconnected and the battery removed in order to avoid possible short circuits. Also, make sure the laptop has cooled down if you used it before – the components get very hot very quickly and you may burn your hand.
The memory can be found in two places: under the laptop or under the keyboard. For both ways there will be some unscrewing to be done. Again, check the manual to make sure you do it right.
Removing laptop Memory
To remove a memory you need to open the side locks and then it will come out easily. The slots are just like in computers.
Installing a new module
To install a new module first check out the notch as it prevents you to install it the wrong way. After inserting the module just close the locks (you need hear a click for each one), close the notebook and you are done.
Check the new configuration
Use Everest or similar software to make sure the new modules are recognized.
