USB Device not Recognized
This error is informing the user that the computer doesn’t recognize the USB device that has been plugged in. This may be because the proper hardware drivers haven’t been installed, or perhaps the device doesn’t support USB 2.0, or a handful of other factors. Before trying any of the troubleshooting procedures, check to make sure that the device is properly plugged into the USB port. A poor connection can create a lot of issues, including this particular error. Also try plugging and unplugging the USB device a few times first.
If the above method did not wok, try one of these ones:
Scanning for new hardware
- First, make sure to unplug the USB device that is giving you trouble installing.
- After unplugging the device, Click the “Start” button at the bottom left-hand side of the screen.
- After the menu pops up, go over and click on the “Control Panel” option.
- While in Classic View, double-click on the icon named “System”. This will bring up the system properties dialog box.
- Now click on the Device Manager tab if it already is not selected. Here you will see a few different options. *Note: There are a few other ways to open up the Device Manager if the aforementioned step wasn’t easy to follow. One way of accessing it is to right-click on “My Computer” in the “Start” menu and then click “Properties”, and then click on the device manager tab from there. Another method that can be used is to click of Start -> Run…, and typing “Devmgmt.msc” (minus the quotes) into the text field and pressing enter.
- Once you have accessed the device manager, click “Scan for hardware changes”, which is located in the action menu.
- Windows will now scan for newly installed devices that have yet to be properly installed. Sometimes Windows has the drivers for certain USB devices built in but other times it will prompt you to install the software from a specific, location such as a DVD or other fie located on your hard drive.
- Once it finishes installing the software. you should be set to go.
Another method you could try out is disabling the power management of the USB hub. This method cannot be recommended for use with laptops, however, as it can drain the battery life much quicker than normal.
Other times, simply try unplugging the USB device for a while and restarting the computer, as the device may need a restart to be properly enumerated.
