Voice Activated Recorder
Voice Activated Recorder
As the name suggests voice activated recorders are the devices that start recording only when there is any sound. As compared to always on voice recorders, voice activated recorders record only when someone speaks and do not waste any recording space on silence.
They are small and convenient devices and very popular for recording lectures in classroom, seminars, conference rooms, taking dictation and secretly recording conversations. They can also be used to record interviews. They are an optimum choice for quick and convenient recordings. Olympus and Sony dominate the market of voice activated recorders; the most popular models being Olympus VN-4100PC and the Sony ICDUX80.
The quality and sensitivity of the microphone of the recorder determines the quality and clarity of your recordings. Highly sensitive and high quality microphones record better and clear. Another important feature of the recorder is its recording time and battery life. There is a difference between the two. Battery life is the amount of time recorder can work without having to recharge.
Recording time is the maximum hours that recorder can record and that too on lowest quality settings. For good quality settings these hours reduce considerably. Low quality recordings are usable only where there is no or very less noise. So it is always better to judge and buy a voice activated recorder based on the quality of its microphone than recording time.
Voice activated recorders come in small to mini and micro sizes. There are key ring recorders and recorders hidden in fountain and ballpoint pens and even in jewelry ornaments like pendants. Voice recorders must also support multiple audio formats: MP1, MP2, MP3, WMA, ASF, WAV.
Voice activated recorders have some positives and some negatives. On the positive side, they are small and very handy to use. They do not waste any resources on recording silence and record only the voice you need. Recollecting what you have recorded is very easy and without any wastage of time.
You can connect your digital voice activated recorder to PC via USB and transfer your recordings. You can store them for as long as you want and use them whenever the need be in a very convenient fashion. You can also edit and share them. On the negative side, since the device activates when someone speaks it may loose some initial words of speech while being turning on.
