VoIP Gateways

VoIP (Voice Over IP) gateways are used for converting VoIP calls to Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).

These gateways can convert voice and fax calls in real time. The VoIP part of the call is where the user calls from a device using the Internet, and then the call is then converted into a signal used by telephones. Software such as Skype is capable of this type of call. However, this software differs form an actual VoIP gateway.

VoIP gateways feature an Ethernet port and a telephone port. A protocol such as LTP can be used in controlling the gateway as such. These support digital channels, which makes for superior sound quality to the end-user. Calls sound more crisp, like you are actually sitting next to the person talking to them.

These systems are useful in utilizing the already set up methods of call making, such as using telephone networks, PBXs (Private Branch Exchange), or other similar types of systems. Using these systems also helps out employees in terms of familiarity, and also saves on costs of having to put in a new system. They also prove to be more flexible in general and also more cost effective overall.

Some of the various functions included in the VoIP gateways include voice compression and decompression for speed related issues, call routing, and other useful functions. Because of their general scalability, ease of use, and other function, the future looks like bright for their continued usage. More and more people are exploring the uses of VoIP and what it has to offer. Not only are VoIP gateways flexible, but they are also quite reliable in terms of stability. As long as the Internet connection is stable, these should work just fine.

More on Skype

“Skype is software that enables the world’s conversations. Millions of individuals and businesses use Skype to make free video and voice calls, send instant messages and share files with other Skype users. Everyday, people everywhere also use Skype to make low-cost calls to landlines and mobiles.”

“Skype isn’t just about free Skype-to-Skype calls and easy, low-cost calls to landlines and cell phones around the world. You can also do much, much more.”

“You can [also] use it on a computer or get Skype on your mobile so you can keep in touch on the move, whatever you’re up to. Skype works on a wide range of mobiles, plus on devices like the PlayStation® Portable (PSP®). There’s also a great range of WiFi and cordless phones with Skype built-in.

Just for starters you can instant message (IM) anyone on your contact list or even use group IM to chat with lots of people at the same time. You could hold a conference call to organise a get-together and then find business recommendations to search for the perfect venue to hold it.” - Skype.com

I’ve heard good things about both Skype and Vonage. These are excellent VoIP products for residential use.
