Widescreen TV
Widescreen televisions are tv’s that utilize a screen much wider than typical television sets. These typical television sets have an aspect ratio of 4:3, where the widescreen’s aspect ratio is 16:9. 16:9 is the common format for movie theaters, and it can be said that this is the original format of the movie. An aspect ratio of 4:3 is the square TV screen, where the 16:9 aspect ratio is the more rectangular shape of TV.
4:3 means 4 times wide by 3 times deep, and as such 16:9 means 16 times wide and 9 times deep. This tells us the general shape. A perfect square’s shape would be something like 4:4 or 16:16.
Widescreen TV’s are becoming more and more popular for good reason. People tend to prefer to watch TV on widescreen TV’s because of the fact that we tend to see images in more of a rectangular shape opposed to that of a square shape. This is because when we look at something, we can also see the images out of our peripheral vision (what you see out of the corner of your eye). This makes wide screen formats more appealing, as they look more natural than what a square image.
When watching a movie at a movie theater, not only is the size much larger for viewing, but it is also fully intact. By this I mean you can see the whole picture as it was intended. However, when you view a movie on a regular square television, they have crop it in order to get it to fit on the TV. This means that The image you’re seeings is showing only the center view of the image, and that the sides are cut off. When you view a movie on a widescreen TV, the widescreen image can be shown as it was intended and you can watch the movie how it was meant to be watched. Not only this, but all the newer widescreen TVs are HD, so you also are getting a better high-resolution picture.
Because Widescreen TV’s come in sizes large than the square TVs, it means you’re going to have to be paying a bit more accordingly. Where square TV’s had sizes of 32 inches and a bit larger, widescreen TV’s usually start out at about 30 inches, so you can see how big their screens typically are. Not only this, but they also use newer technologies (such as plasma or LCD) for the screen, which also attributes to the higher costs.
