I am four days late in making this post but feels I still should make it as I have some interesting thoughts about it. First the News - the supposedly Google Killer, Wikia Search has been shut down as per Jimbo Wales blog. As per Jimbo Wales, wikia search wsn’t getting enough traction and growth as other wiki foundation products like wiki answers.

I think it was a good product but was marketed badly. The burden of being Google Killer right from day 1 is never easy to handle, not to mention when you are working on untested grounds of search. Infact it will be very harsh to even compare wikia search with google search and to call it a failure.

Wikia search didn’t got enough traction and was shut down because it wasn’t offering anything better then what google was offering. The results were certainly no way near google results and its not possible for anyone to beat google if you can’t get better search result then google. I don’t think giving spins like user generated content search or we have bigger index (cuill) is going to help anyone.

Anyway wkia search is not shut down permanently and most likely will again come, probably in new packaging. For the time being wiki foundation is looking to focus more on wiki answers as its getting huge traffic from search engines.
