Will youtube Shut Down Video Download websites ?
Google had announced on 12th February on their youtube blog post that they are offering download service for some of their videos, both as a free service as well as paid so now users can allow their videos to be downloaded officially for a certain fees.
So far, google uses creative commons license for their videos to people can download any youtube videos for free directly from youtube through various methods or using 3rd party service like keepvid.com. Now it seems google is looking to change the licensing terms and they won’t be offering videos for free which means downloading videos or providing services to download videos will become illegal.
This is a pretty good method to generate revenue for google (right now its free but in future google can charge small fees for such videos, anyway people have to use google checkout to buy video/receive money so google is getting something out of this anyway). Google has already shut down TechCrunch Youtube video download service and they may start shuting down other such services too. With the change in license, such services will anyway become illegal which should force the big site owners to stop the service or will google allow to run such sites as aggressively shutting down such services can backfire and will generate lot of heat on the web.
