Wireless Mouse
The wireless mouse has become quite popular in use these past few years. Although most mice are still connected directly to users computers via a cord, wireless mice will always have their place in today’s market. The freedom involved with wireless mice is quite a thing to behold!
There are two basic ways that a wireless mouse may operate. This is via the 802.11b/g radio frequency or by the Bluetooth radio frequency. Let us examine the two different methods:
802.11b/g RF
This radio frequency includes the 802.11b and the 802.11g standards. These two frequencies operate at 2.4GHz, which is about the same frequency that most cordless phones operate on. It’s also the same frequency that the majority of wireless routers operate on as well. Sometimes interference may be caused when two different devices are operating at the same time (on the same frequency). If the router is causing the interference, changing the channel the router operates on can remedy this situation. These frequencies are very quick and are great for use with wireless mice, not the mention the range given (100 ~ 150 ft).
Bluetooth RF
A newer option available with wireless mice is the Bluetooth radio frequency. Some other devices that be used with Bluetooth technologies include cellphones, PDAs, keyboards, headsets, and more. It just makes sense that wireless mice are now including Bluetooth as a way to function. Bluetooth wireless mice also operate at 2.4GHz, so speed wise it can match the 802.11b/g RF. However, it also include a technique to assure that no interference is dampering it’s performance.
This technique is known as “adaptive frequency hopping”, and the wireless mouse can search for the frequencies that have the least of interference. This shows that Bluetooth has a slight advantage over the 802.11b/g frequencies. However, a Bluetooth wireless mouse only has a range of about 33 feet. This range should be more than enough for most users, though. If planning to go for long distance for some reason or another, go with the 802.11b/g RF.
The different types of Wireless mice
Today, there are three different types of wireless mice:
- Mechanical mice - These use the old-fashioned rubber ball for movement detection. This type of mouse gets dirty easily and is slowly dying out.
- Optical mouse - This mouse is currently the standard in wireless mice (and most other mice). It uses an optical light to determine if the mouse is moving, and have a good response rate.
- Laser mice - The newest of all three technologies, laser mice have the most precise movement detection and also have very fast response times.
