WMV (Windows Media Video) is a filetype used as a video encoding option for video files. This video type also commonly uses the WMA (Windows Media Audio) codec for the audio portion of the file. This file cntainer was created by Micosoft and is their answer to the MPEG-4 video container technology. This file type was developed with internet streaming in mind.

This file type has competed with the AVI file type in the past, and is slowly being outdone by newer video codecs, such as the MKV file type. This file types was first introduced way back in 1999, but has aged rather well for the amount of time that has passed. It still seems to be a common format for videos which are sent by email.

Playing WMV files

If you are running Windows, playing this file type should be natively supported by the bundled Windows Media Player. Versions 7 and up should be able to effectively play Windows Media Players files. You may also update Windows Media Player for free at any time via Microsoft’s website.

Converting WMV files
