I was just looking to see which of .co.in or .in tld (top level domain) is more popular among Indian websites and it looks though earlier it was .co.in which was popular, now most of the indian sites perfer .IN as top level domain.

But this post is not about that, this post is about domainers registering allmost all good combinations of .IN domains which are strictly meant for Indians only. No matter what the domain you come up with, the chances are its already taken.

Its a shame that Indian government is not doing much about it (they don’t have to do much anyway, just issue a warning that they will go to ICANN and void such domain registeration which will scare most of the domainers anyway and they will release the domains). Many nations are very strict about their tld and only allow their nationals to register domains of national extensions and it will be good if Indian government also do this.

Since the registration costs of most of these domains are dirt cheap (if you use bulk registration and discount coupons), domain grabbers buy hundreds of domains in one go and sit on them hoping that people will come to them and they can sell it for very high price. Its worth noting that almost none of these domain grabbers are Indians.
