After writing how to register .co.in and .in domains post I felt to write another post on them to tell the difference between them and which of them is better.

.co.in stands for country India and is a second level tld (top level domain) where as .in stands for India and is a top level domain. Earlier .co.in were popular but nowdays I see more and more people choosing .in domains over .co.in for ease of remembering them.

From search engines point of view, both domain names will be associated to india with no more weight age to anyone so you can go with anyone. Personally I will say go with .in for the reason that they “look and sound” better as compared .co.in and are more brandable with Indian names.

Here are some of the differences between .in and .co.in domain -

1. .co.in were started first as indian domains and .in got launched later though now it looks .in have overtaken them and are more popular.

2. .in are considered to be most valuable then .co.in which are third level domains.

3. More and more indian companies are going the .in way instead of .co.in way which clearly gives a trend about what is the future.

My advice will be to buy both if you have the money or else just buy .in first and .com too if available.
