How to apply for Indian Passport

Getting a passport in India is a must even if you are not looking to travel abroad in recent times as passport is an important document which you can use for verification of other documents like PAN card or to open a bank account or to get a credit card.

And unlike other identity proofs, Indian passport is probably the best identity proof you can have which is easiest to show unlike ration card which are often very old and most of the people don’t even carry with them as they leave them to their native places.

Anyway to apply for Passport in India, here is what you have to do -

1. Go to your nearby Passport Office and get the passport form. Many local big stationary people also keep the form which anyway costs Rs 10.

2. Now filling the Indian passport form is one of the most difficult thing as any mistake will get your form rejected and then you have to do lot of reediting and sometimes go throough the whole process of filling it again, adding few weeks. So be very careful while filling the form. Always use Capital letters in filling the Passport form and fill the same names of mothers and fathers name as shown in the ration cards or other documents. I have seen huge number of people’s passport applications keep on getting rejected because they add “devi” or something in the end in their mothers name which is not shown in the document.

3. Take 4-5 passport size photographs with you along with glue when you are going to submit your form, do not paste the pictures but do it in front of passport officer.

4. Take all the proofs of your identity, age, address. The MUST carry documents are your 10th class entrance card as your age proof (also take your 12th class documents too as well marksheets too, you never know, you may have to fill it)

5. You will also have to give passport fees of Rs 2000 for Normal Candidate and Rs 1000 for SC/ST. I am not sure about the current fees though so do confirm it. Its good if you carry more money in case the fees turns out to be high.

6. Always go early in the morning as you have to give your application and then you will get your calls on the basis of these applications, so if you come early, you will get early call.

Once your form gets filled, after few weeks, a police inspector comes to your address to verify whether the address mentioned is right or not. As much as you hate to do it, they often ask Rs 100-150. Anyway this procedure has been stopped, please ask about this while giving your passport application.

7. In a month or so, you should get your passport by registered Post. If you don’t collect it, it will be send back to Main Post office and in few days will get returned to Passport office of India, so make sure you tell your postman to deliver it to you, don’t hesitate to pay him Rs 50, its worth it.

    I had got my passport last year and it was pretty easy as my elder sister already has a passport. Also if possible, try to find a bigger city to apply for passport, it helps alot as they have much faster way of making things happen

    First of all the procedure that you mentioned is the day dream in India. I have hand on experience on getting Passport from Bombay and from Calcutta.
    People who are applying in Calcutta or have residence in West Bengal follow my advice:
    1. In case of normal application apply atleast 1 year before of your need for passport. your passport will stuck in the police station atleast for 6 months.
    2. If you need within a year!!! apply for tatkkal service!! and make sure you know a SDO, DM or some higher officer who will sign for you!!!
    3. When police verification will come (most probably after 6 months), get the police name and phone number and try immediately to check that the phone number works.
    4. Go to the police station and check if they send your paper. (they may ask for money, hate to say, but through some meat to those dogs).
    5. Relax after you get your passport.

    …. I hate India’s passport system!! They tried to improve but the dogs always bark for their meat and kills the system…

    My mom needs to apply for a fresh passport. She has ration card, bank accounts, PAN card, Pension card issued by government, X std marksheet. She lost her voter ID card. But in the checklist, it says we need to submit “citizenship document”. What it is? Does it refer to the voter ID card? In that case, what can my mom do to apply for passport? It is very urgent.
