More on Indian Railways

From 1853 to 2009, the Indian Railways has certainly come a long way. The 63,140 Kms of rail network is the 5th largest in the world, and not just covers 28 states and 3 union territories, but also stretches up to Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan. Each year, the railways transport 7 billion passengers and 350 million tones of freight. This statistic clearly indicates the enormity, expansiveness and extensiveness of railway system in India.

With time, the Indian Railways has also undergone change. Steam locomotives have been replaced by diesel and electric locomotives; broad gauge is taking the place of the original narrow and metre gauge. Manual ticketing has been replaced by electronic ticketing system. Apart from general, sleeper and first classes, AC two tier, AC three tier and AC Chair Car have been introduced to make the journey more comfortable and enjoyable. Several super fast trains as Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express have been introduced to save the precious time of the passengers. In all long-distance trains pantry car is attached for the benefit of the passengers.

Although Indian Railways enjoy complete monopoly, but there are some private players too. For instance, Funicular Railways of Tatas, BG Rail Network of Bhilai Steel Plant, and Kutch Railway Company of Gujarat State Government. However, none of these railway networks have the capacity to challenge the insurmountable dominance of the Indian Railways.
