Problems with Shaadi.com and other Matrimonial sites of India

If you are a paid user of shaadi.com, I am sure you too must have noticed the possibilities of improvement in Shaadi.com, I mean after spending hours and hours you can barely see any unique profiles, for some unexplained reason, shaadi.com keeps on showing same profiles over and over again every time you logs in, how difficult it can be to not to show the profiles which you have already seen or to have a history tab which can show the last 100 profiles which a person has seen ?

2 more things which I am not able to understand about shaadi is

1. What is this shaadi seal and what is the point of it ? shouldn’t it be a default feature and what purpose does this shaadi seal solve anyway ? it should be shaadi’s responsibility to make sure that all profiles are legit.

2. why shaadi.com shows 10 profiles per page when you are browsing ? it is really painful to click on next over and over again for 25 or 30 times. The only reason I can see why shaadi.com is showing 10 profiles per page and not 25 is because of the advertisement which they have inserted, the more page views the site gets, the more money they make, again sad part of a site which otherwise has excellent ui elements.

And the most disturbing part of Shaadi.com (and all matrimonial sites) is that most of the profiles are created by the parents who have very little understanding of how the real world on web interacts, more then 50% profile with images ask for approval and password which is ridiculous, I mean when these people have no problem posting their pics on Orkut and Facebook then why shy to post your pic on a matrimonial site ? also the number which these sites like Shaadi.com and BharatMatrimony gives are NO WAY near to what the exact figures are. I am a paid member on both sites and here are what the real figures are.

Shaadi claims to have over 10 million profiles, fine, how many of them have logged in in the past 30 days ? I bet not even 10% (this is based on what shaadi.com shows to me), so only 100,000 active profiles, out of this, there will only be 20% properly filled profiles where the person has filled what he/she is and what he/she is looking for, so this means 20,000 useful profiles, now out of these, only 5,000 will have visible photos, for the rest, you have to contact them to put pics or send you password, another very frustrating thing.

Also if you put some basic filters like the age, working and may be religion/mother tongue, this 5000 figure will come into few hundreds and I am not putting any caste, state/city and language filters.

So that is it, I am paying Rs 3400 for 3 months to view 200 profiles, all these 10+ million profiles is a hogwash.

Now i am not blaiming shaadi.com and bharatmatrimony if the users are not uploading their pics or not putting any useful info about them, but if they want to keep on growing, they have to make the effort to rectify all these problems.

    hi,
I can’t comment on shaadi.com but my cousin is a member on Bharatmatrimony and he seems to be happy in terms of the responses and the completeness of the profiles. may be you should do a review of Bharatmatrimony which is believed to capture the most comprehensive information about its members and has been rated over Shaadi.

Hi Raghu, thanks for the comment, I am assuming you are a representative of BM :) but its alrgiht, I will give it a shot in few days even though its rates are higher than shaadi.com and I am looking to avoid 3k to 2 sites using none of them properly but will surely give it a try to BM

Hey Abhimanyu - interesting post - highlights very real problems with all the existing matrimonial portals which actual users like you face. Ultimately, all the matrimonial sites out there today are simply online classifieds. Checkout http://www.youpid.in - we launched in beta a few months back (full disclosure - I’m the co-founder). We’re taking a social networking based approach to matrimony, something that savvy internet users today are already used to. The idea is to give a context (so you dont need things like shaadi seal!) and ensure some level of authenticity. We’re still a free service and are on the cusp of adding more features after some great user feedback.
